Jalandhar, March 24

Tehbazari Department officials, along with police personnel, today acted against vendors putting up rehris at the Sunday Bazaar. Around 500 vendors put up their rehris every Sunday at the bazaar.

Heavy police force was deployed in the area today.

The Tehbazari officials said they did not allow the vendors to put up their rehris till the afternoon and after that they requested the officials to give them one week’s time and they would take their rehris to the alternative site next week.

Notably, the officials said the vendors would be given an alternative site where they could put up their rehris.

The bazaar causes the worst clogging in the city on the already congested Old GT Road. As many as 500 illegal vendors can be seen on both sides of the road. Long traffic snarls are, therefore, common on the stretch. A huge traffic congestion can be seen on a regular basis at Jyoti Chowk.

Since the Old GT Road is situated in the heart of the city, the issue affects commuters in the city badly.

It is not for the first time that such action was initiated against the vendors who run their businesses in the Sunday market. The issue has been raised several times during road safety meetings in the past with the Deputy Commissioner too, but to no avail.

Traffic snarls a regular feature
