Taking action against a complaint lodged by Hardip Singh, a resident of Ajjowal village in Hoshiarpur, the district Vigilance Bureau team today arrested a government employee and a Class IV employee for demanding Rs 14,000 as bribe from Hardip for getting his land registry work done without an NOC.

The suspects have been identified as Sarwan Singh, reader of assistant registrar (naib tehsildar/tehsildar), Hoshiarpur district, and Rakesh Kumar, working as a peon at the tehsildar office here.

The complainant, who is running a finance firm in his village in the name of Bains Finance Company, wanted to sell his 2.5-marla land for which he went to the tehsildar office in Hoshiarpur. Kanwaljit Kumar, deed writer, HSP, told the complainant that the reader was demanding Rs 14,000 extra in addition to the government fee for the registration of the land.

Sarwan also told the complainant that his NOC won’t be considered if he didn’t pay the bribe. However, after convincing him, the complainant fixed the deal at Rs 1,000 and today while accepting the bribe, the suspects were caught red-handed. Sarwan had handed over the money to Rakesh.

SSP, Vigilance Bureau (VB), Daljinder Singh Dhillon, said the complainant before giving the bribe money had approached the Hoshiarpur Vigilance Bureau. Subsequently, Dalbir Singh, Deputy SP, Vigilance Bureau, Hoshiarpur, laid a trap and caught the suspects red-handed. A case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended by the PC (Amendment) Act, 2018, and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against the duo.
