UK-based NRI Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal is set to open a cancer research centre at a cost of Rs25 crore near Surya Enclave here.

Dhaliwal, who was in Nawanshahr on Friday, for a cancer-screening camp, said the centre was ready and would be opened in a month or so. “It will be a 50-bedded hospital where free screening of cancer will be done. Experts will also research on the disease. Hypertension and diabetic patients will also get treatment and free medicines at the centre. We will also adopt children suffering from cancer and provide them free treatment,” he said, adding that all provisions are being made under World Cancer Care Charitable Society.

The NRI, hailing from Moga, said he had seen his mother dying of cancer 18 years ago and since then, he had a mission to provide a facility of early diagnosis of cancer to the residents of all 12,783 villages of Punjab free of cost.

“I have organised camps in 9,000 villages and intend to cover the rest as well. On Friday, more than 2,000 residents of 11 villagers turned up for free cancer detection tests at JSFS Khalsa Senior Secondary School in Nawanshahr. There were nine mobile cancer units with mammography machines, PETS scanning and other facilities present,” he said.

Vice-president of Sewa Sankalp Society Harpreet Sandhu said the camp was part of ‘Sehat Sewa’, a series of new events dedicated to the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

The camp was inaugurated by the District and Sessions Judge, Nawanshahr, Amarinder Singh Grewal in the presence of Jalandhar IG Naunihal Singh, DC Vinay Bublani, SSP Alka Meena and several judicial officers.
