Phillaur, January 22

The police have arrested a local resident, Rimple, and her paramour Lakhbir Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, on the charges of stealing Rs 15 lakh in cash and gold ornaments, weighing 25 tolas, worth Rs 8 lakh from the house of her in-laws here yesterday.

The theft came to light when Rakesh Kumar, husband of Rimple, lodged a complaint in this regard with the police, which scanned CCTV camera footage of the area.

Though Rakesh got married with Rimple, a resident of Mao Sahib village, on September 11, 2018, she was having an affair with Lakhbir through Facebook before the marriage. She continued the illicit relationship after the marriage also.

Phillaur Deputy Superintendent of Police Amrik Singh Chahal said here today that Rimple committed the theft and handed over two bags containing the cash and the gold to Lakhbir, a resident of Sadhawala village in Ludhiana. The latter works at a photo studio there.

The DSP said the crime was captured in CCTV cameras.

He said both suspects were planning to run away by a train but were nabbed on the way to the local railway station last night.

The police have recovered Rs 4,27,000 in cash and gold ornaments weighing 20 tolas from them. — OC
