Work on second entry to rly station set to begin, says MP

Member of Parliament (MP) Santokh Singh Chaudhary said the construction of the second entry to the city railway station from the Qazi Mandi area would start soon.

Talking to The Tribune, MP Santokh Singh said the second entry to the railway station from the Qazi Mandi area and escalators at the station had been a long-pending demand of the public.

“Applications of both projects along with the required documents have been forwarded to the railways and we are hopeful that within a few days the railway authorities will proceed further,” he said.

He said he had a meeting with the Central Government and the railways regarding the issue of second entry in the past and the matter was discussed in brief, an NOC from the Jalandhar Improvement Trust was required earlier, which now has been passed and will be handed over to the railways within a week.

ML Sehgal, president of the Surya Enclave Extension Welfare Society, said: “Since long, we have been demanding the shifting of goods shed of the railway station to the Suranussi station to provide a second entry to the railway station from the side of our colony. As the majority of the goods were arriving at the shed located in Suranassi railway station, the shed at the city railway station had become almost abandoned.”

He said a letter in this regard had also been sent to Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and in the MC House meeting too, the demand was raised to which MP Santokh Singh assured that the project would begin soon.

As per sources, a railways engineering team has been planning to join the Qazi Mandi-Surya Enclave road with the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway and at the place of the goods shed, situated near Qazi Mandi, a new entry to the railway station has been proposed.

MLA Rajinder Beri said: “The NOC from the Jalandhar Improvement Trust has been procured and other formalities required in the process had been done. The second entry to the station will prove beneficial and would also reduce traffic congestion near it. We are hopeful that the work will start soon.”
