Workshop on data science concludes

A two-day workshop on data science organised by computer centre at Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology concluded here on Tuesday. The main objective accomplished through this workshop was to provide a single platform for global exchange of experiences and development in the rising field of data sciences. It was an evident opportunity for students to gain and foster their knowledge through exposure to the latest on-going trends, tools and practices used at a global scale.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof LK Awasthi, director, NIT Jalandhar, in the presence of organisers Geeta Sikka and Mamta Khosla, faculty as well as participants. The event was onset with an expert talk delivered by Prof Lalit Kumar Awasthi regarding the significance of data science in today’s scenario. He threw light on how data science had revolutionised the world today. He talked about how the humongous volumes of data that was generated daily can be processed effectively using data mining techniques. He discussed the case study of Implementation of ERP system in NIT Jalandhar wherein all the administrative processes of the institute would be channelised. Further, he concluded his talk by emphasising on solving day to day problems with use of data analytics and artificial intelligence.

The resource person of the workshop was Prof Sharma Chakravarthy from the University of Texas, Arlington, USA. Chakravarthy introduced the audience with the different approaches that have come about for managing and analysing data over the last 40 years. He emphasised on the problems and solutions for the modelling and analysis of complex data sets. He illustrated the audience with the elegance of multilayer networks for modelling by using a few well-known data sets. In the last session, several case studies were discussed to showcase the approach.

Second day of the workshop was again started with Prof Chakravarthy, who delivered talk on “Map reduced approach to scalable graph mining”. After that Prof Rajesh Bhatia from PEC Chandigarh delivered an engrossing talk on data analysis of Indian origin academicians. He discussed that how information can be extracted by applying web crawling on websites and how web search engines and other sites use web crawling to update their web contents. Punit Jindal from Eduwaive Foundation, Chandigarh, delivered a talk on data science from industry perspective and gave hands-on training on exploratory data analysis using Python with its libraries Pandas and Hadoop.
