Jalandhar, December 5

A day after an incident of firing in Ludhiana during the ongoing Youth Congress elections, security was beefed up in Jalandhar too.

In Jalandhar, polling was held for Jalandhar (Urban) Youth Congress at the Congress Bhawan. Today, voters from the Jalandhar West and Jalandhar Cantt constituencies cast their votes. No one other than the candidate that too with voter name verification and ID proof was allowed to enter the premises of the bhawan. The police stood guard inside the venue, at gates and even on all roads leading to the bhawan.

Only 793 voters from Jalandhar West, of a total of 2,800 enrolled youth members cast their votes. From Jalandhar Cantt, only 483 voters of the 2,700 voters turned up to vote. Candidates rued that certain lacunae in the voting arrangements, including incomplete details of the candidates in the list, restriction on bringing specific ID cards and use of tabs for polling was leading to confusion, hence, lesser turnout. Polling for the Jalandhar North Assembly area will be held tomorrow. Results are to be announced on Saturday.
