A 23-year-old man was critically injured after unidentified assailants opened fire on him at the grain market in Sultanpur Lodhi late on Thursday night, triggering panic among traders and local residents. The incident, which took place barely 100 metres from the Dalla police outpost, has raised fresh concerns over law and order in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers targeted the victim while he was at an arhtiya’s (commission agent’s) trading platform inside the grain market. They allegedly fired four to five rounds before fleeing the scene. The sound of gunfire sent people scrambling for safety as panic gripped the grain market.
The victim was identified as Sunny (23), a resident of Mauju Khera village in Haryana’s Sirsa district. Bystanders rushed him to the Civil Hospital in Sultanpur Lodhi, where doctors provided initial treatment before referring him to a higher medical centre due to the severity of his injuries.
Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and launched an investigation. Dalla police outpost in-charge Jasjit Singh said three empty cartridge shells were recovered from the scene. He said investigators were probing the case from all possible angles and efforts were underway to identify and arrest the assailants.
Confirming the victim’s condition, Dr Arpan Kaur of the Civil Hospital, Sultanpur Lodhi, said the injured man was brought to the hospital in critical condition late at night. After receiving initial treatment, he was referred to the Civil Hospital, Kapurthala, for advanced medical care.
The brazen attack, which took place near a police outpost, has sparked fear among traders and residents and raised serious concerns about public safety and policing in the area. The police said the investigation was ongoing, with more details expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
