The victim was travelling with two of his friends on a bike when the attack took place.
According to the police, the assailants fired three shots at close range, killing the youth on the spot. The deceased has been identified as Kesar Dhami (26), a resident of Sadra Sodhian village in Bullowal. A farmer by profession, Dhami had come to meet his friends.
Preliminary investigation suggests that an old rivalry may have been the motive behind the shooting. The assailants have been identified as Chandan Shekhar, a resident of Mehtiana (Hoshiarpur), and Jaspal Singh alias Jassa, a resident of Daroli Kalan.
The police said Dhami, along with his friends Bhupinder Singh of Payala village and Gagan, was riding a motorcycle back from the university when two bike‑borne men rammed their vehicle. The trio fell due to the impact, after which the assailants approached them. Both Chandan and Jassa allegedly took turns firing at Dhami, hitting him in the head and killing him instantly. The attack occurred around 3.10 pm.
DSP Adampur Rajiv Kumar said, “As per preliminary information, there was an old rivalry between Kesar and the youths. Antecedents of the assailants are further being verified. The case is still under investigation.”
Sources said Jassa had been beaten up by Dhami a few years ago, and the duo reportedly targeted him today in retaliation.
The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, for post‑mortem. An FIR is yet to be registered at the time of filing this report, though the police said the case would be registered shortly.
Dhami had reportedly come to meet his friend Bhupinder Singh, and the two later rode to meet their friend Gagan. After leaving the university, they were suddenly hit by Jassa and his aide, who then opened fire on Dhami.
