Youth held for ‘abducting, assaulting’ minor girl in Phagwara

A disturbing incident involving the alleged abduction and assault of a minor girl with intellectual disability has come to light from Gobindpura locality in Phagwara, prompting swift police action and arrest of the accused. Phagwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Madhvi Sharma stated that the full facts of the case would be established after the medical examination report was received.

According to information shared by the SP, the complainant, Lalita, a resident of New Colony, Gobindpura, works as a sanitation worker. Her 15-year-old daughter is reportedly unable to speak and is mentally challenged. On the day of the incident, Lalita had left for work as usual, while the girl was standing outside their residence.

It was alleged that an unidentified youth arrived on an Activa scooter on the spot and enticed the minor girl before taking her along. When the family noticed her absence, they began searching for her frantically. After nearly four hours, the girl was reportedly found in an injured condition near a railway crossing gate in the area.

The matter was immediately reported to the Satnampura police, who shifted the victim to the Phagwara Civil Hospital for medical examination. Police officials confirmed that further clarity regarding the nature of the alleged offence would emerge after the medical report was received.

In connection with the case, the police arrested the accused, identified as Umesh, a resident of Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, who was presently residing near Lajawab Dhaba in Guru Hargobind Nagar, Phagwara. A case was registered against him under Section 137 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The SP said an investigation was in progress and appropriate legal action would follow based on the medical findings and further evidence. Senior police officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice in the case and maintaining law and order in the city.
