Srinagar, June 2

In all, eight persons were injured in Saturday night clashes when people were observing Shab-e-Qadr.

Intense nocturnal clashes erupted in some old parts of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district in which four youth were injured.

Clashes erupted in the Reshi Bazar and Lal Chowk areas of the town as some youth clashed with forces deployed in the area. The security forces used teargas shells, some of which also landed into the local mosques, including the Jamia Masjid of the town, eyewitnesses said.

“The people praying in mosques were suffocated and many had to be rushed to the hospital during the night. The clashes continued for most part of the night which left four injured,” a local said.

Officials said clashes erupted when youth threw stones at a police post in Sherbagh and Reshmali Sahab areas.

“Four persons suffered minor injuries in the clashes and were discharged after receiving first aid at the District Hospital, Anantnag,” an official said.

There were also reports of clashes in parts of Srinagar during the night. A doctor at SMHS Hospital said four persons with pellet injuries were brought to the hospital.

“All of them were hit by pellets in the eyes,” the doctor added.

Clashes were also reported in north Kashmir’s Sopore sub-district. The clashes erupted near a supermarket. The protesters were later chased by the police.
