Aligarh Muslim University on Tuesday revoked the suspension of Kashmiri students who were served show-cause notice and booked under sedition charges.

The action was taken against the students after they offered the funeral prayers for Hizbul Mujahideen militant Manan Wani, who was a PhD scholar at AMU.

AMU spokesperson Omar Peerzada said the step was taken after the three-member probe panel found that suspension will be a harsh step based on the students’ conduct.

Earlier in the day, J-K Governor Satya Pal Malik spoke to Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar, seeking his intervention. The Governor also spoke to AMU Vice Chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor in this regard.

Malik urged Javadekar and Prof Tariq to ensure that the issue was resolved at the earliest and the Kashmiri students were allowed to continue their studies in a safe and secure environment.

Nearly 1,200 Kashmiri students studying in the university had threatened to quit if the sedition charges were not withdrawn. The mainstream political party leaders, university students and people in the Valley had all come in the support of students and appealed the Governor to intervene.
