Srinagar, August 24

Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces after the culmination of Friday prayers in Srinagar’s old city.

A group of youngsters tried to take out a march in the Nowhatta area, but it was not allowed by the police.

“Youth threw stones at the forces as they were not allowed to protest,” local sources said. The clashes continued for at least an hour and the police used force to disperse them.

A police officer said there was no report of anyone getting hurt in the clashes.

“The clashes remained confined to Nowhatta,” he said. However, locals said many protesters were injured in the clashes. The protesters were also carrying pro-militant banners.

Initially, a group of protesters were seen carrying banners in support of Article 35A that has been challenged in the Supreme Court.
