The Jammu and Kashmir Police has seized a large quantity of foreign-made cigarettes in the city centre which did not carry the mandatory health warning, the police said on Saturday.

The cigarettes were seized during raids by cops at Kokar Bazar.

The cigarettes with no statutory warning were seized from at least three shops which were raided on Friday, a police officer said. Action was taken under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003 in this regard.

As per the Act, it is mandatory to print on the cover the prescribed health warning on cigarette packets or other tobacco products. However, such warning is not put on most of the foreign-made cigarettes.
