Governor Satya Pal Malik inaugurated the 64th National School Games U-17 Boys’ Football Championship at the BSF Sports Stadium in Paloura, here on Monday.
In all, 37 teams from across the country are participating in this five-day football tournament.
Welcoming the participants, the Governor noted that football was a popular game with followers around the world and it was also loved by people in J&K. He expressed his happiness in hosting teams from all over the country.
Emphasising the crucial importance of sports for ensuring physical well-being and overall personality development of the youth, Malik observed that such tournaments provide a platform to the youngsters to showcase their talent and excel in sports, besides giving them a chance to interact and know people from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds and inculcate the values of sharing, discipline and team spirit.
He complimented the department of youth services and sports, J&K, for hosting the football tournament.
Earlier, the Governor unfurled the flag of the School Games Federation of India and took salute from the marching contingents of players. A colourful cultural programme was presented on the occasion. Adviser K Vijay Kumar welcomed the participating teams and gave his best wishes to the players.
