Srinagar, January 18

Jaish-e-Mohammad militants on Friday carried out two grenade attacks in Srinagar and Shopian.

Though no one was injured in the grenade attacks, these have sent security forces into a tizzy ahead of Republic Day.

The militants hurled a hand grenade at a Central Reserve Police Force bunker near Ghanta Ghar in Lal Chowk, which missed the target and exploded on the road.

“No one was injured in the attack. However, a private vehicle and two shops suffered some damage due to the blast,” a security official said.

The attack took place in the busy city centre at 1.15 pm. An initial investigation hinted that two militants were involved in the grenade attack. “We suspect the two fled on a bike after the attack,” the official said.

It was the second grenade attack in Srinagar in the last 24 hours. Four policemen, including an officer, were injured in an attack at a police outpost at Rajbagh on Thursday. Since January 11, three grenade attacks have been carried out by the Jaish in Srinagar city.

There are intelligence inputs that a Jaish module was carrying out the attacks. Soon after Friday’s attack at Lal Chowk, the security was beefed up across the city.

CRPF IG Ravideep Sahi said they had strengthened the area domination and ‘nakas’ to ensure that such incidents don’t take place.

Almost an hour after the Srinagar incident, another hand grenade was lobbed at a J&K Police installation in the Shopian area. “There was no report of any injury,” a police officer said.

Meanwhile, police also foiled an attempt to carry out a grenade attack in Kupwara district by arresting a Lolab resident. “A grenade was recovered from Mohammad Aslam Beigh of Maidanpora, Lolab. The individual was planning to join a terrorist outfit, and along with others was planning an attack in Kupwara,” SSP Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar said.

Firing in Pulwama

The police fired in the air in Pulwama district after noticing suspicious movement on Friday evening. They said a sentry on observing some suspicious movement near the Kakpora police station fired a few rounds in the air. “The area has been cordoned off,” a police officer said.
