The district administration in Kathua appears to have come out of its slumber after the imposition of Governor’s rule as developmental activities have got an impetus in Kathua town.

This has become evident from the fact that the much-awaited multistorey parking complex at Mukherji Chowk, which remained a non-starter even after the passage of more than four years, finally witnessed some headway as Kathua Deputy Commissioner Rohit Khajuria has ordered the dismantling of all government buildings immediately so that work on the project could begin.

The Deputy Commissioner also announced opening of parking space for public near Nagri Chowk which had not been done even after the completion of all works.

Keeping in view of the parking problem in the main market of Kathua town, the then Divisional Commissioner of Jammu had laid a foundation stone for the multistorey parking project at Mukherji Chowk in 2014. But the project got delayed as many government offices, including the offices of the Chief Medical Officer, Power Development Department and a store of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, were functioning there.

“The project will go a long way in reducing traffic congestion and provide adequate parking space for vehicles in the heart of Kathua town,” the Deputy Commissioner said, adding that the already complete parking stand near Nagari Chowk would be started for public without any delay. Besides, more parking spaces would be created in the town for which the process had started.

The parking facility will ease traffic congestion on the busy Mukherji Chowk and its adjoining areas.

Sources in the administration said the Governor may visit Kathua next week to review developmental projects in the district.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner convened a meeting to review the physical and financial achievements of various departments under district capex budget along with various Centrally sponsored schemes.
