Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for speaking in support of distressed Kashmiri students and traders, who have come under mob attacks in past week.

Omar, who is the vice-president of the National Conference, while reacting to the PM’s statement said he had spoken about “feelings of our heart”.

“Thank you Narendra Modi sahib. Aaj aap ne hamaray dil ki baat keh di (today you have spoken about feelings of our heart),” tweeted Omar said, adding that he hoped the attacks against Kashmiris would now stop.

“It’s been a more than a week since the terrible attack in Pulwama and more than a week that Kashmiris have been bearing the brunt of the public anger. Perhaps, finally after Modi sahib has spoken, these forces targeting Kashmiris will stop in their tracks,” he said.

Addressing a rally in Rajasthan, the Prime Minister said, “our fight is for Kashmir, not against Kashmiris”. “Kashmiris have suffered the most due to terrorism, and the rest of the country must stand in their support,” he said.

Tahir Syeed, a spokesman of the PDP, said the announcement from the Prime Minister has “come late, but it is a welcome step”. “The Prime Minister should now ensure that no attacks take place against Kashmiri students or traders anywhere in the country,” he said.
