Robotics is an industry that deals with the design, operation, planning, construction, and application of robots. As per the World Robotics Report by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), in 2017, 3,81,000 industrial robots were shipped across the globe. By 2021, the number is expected to increase to 6,30,000. 1.4 million new industrial robots are to be installed globally across factories by 2019.

Robotics has evolved in the past many years as industrial labour costs have gone up, and the need for precision and accuracy have become paramount. Using robotics technology, it is possible to simplify and automate processes, thus reducing the chances of human error and improving quality.

Infrastructure: All industrial sectors from manufacturing to research and development are using robotic assistants to minimise labour and spike growth

Automotive: Robotics has become an integral part of the automotive sector. From manufacturing to robot-driven cars, the technology is still in a growing phase in the industry. For example, robotic hands help paint cars with precision.

Healthcare: Automated assistants help conduct tests, check for discrepancies, etc. Doing so helps in getting accurate results and minimises risk of human error.

Defense: Think unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) commonly known as drones for various military applications. They are used for multiple military operations ranging from manning difficult geographical terrain to spying

Aerospace:  In the aerospace sector, auto-pilot robots are already in use. Alongside, complicated procedures like drilling holes with accuracy is now being done by robots in aerospace manufacturing.

Construction: Machine-based robots for carrying around heavier gear, materials, etc. 3D printing robots can create buildings as per demand. Currently, the first 3D printed bridge is under construction in The Netherlands.

Innovations and technology

The future of robotics is definitely bright. Robotics will play a vital role in homes with robot assistants. They can also be synched with virtual voice assistants. Delivery robots (Amazon NY has already tried this, and Segway’s Loomo robot is an example). They will ensure quicker deliveries for courier services and transportation. Collaborative robots working alongside humans are already being tested. Imagine robots handing over packages for wrapping or carrying out packed materials, which has already been implemented. Robots with AI are being tested and would result in smarter robots. They can interact and have reactions similar to humans.

Future trends

Along with the above mentioned innovations, open standards are changing the market too. AWS RoboMaker platform by Amazon is built on open source Robotic Operating System (ROS) standards — offering more flexibility in terms of shape and size.

The overall market for robotics is just expected to surge. Robotics has also opened avenues for experimentation, from medical technology to AI and even for deliveries — new career options are on the rise. It’s a new and evolved field that will use a mix of skills from different disciplines, the wages in this sector command a very high premium due to lack of skilled talent.
