High on job appeal

The logistics industry is one of the foremost drivers of economic growth and development. Currently, the Indian logistics industry provides employment to more than a million people. Internet penetration, growth in ecommerce segment and technology deployment in the sector will continue to drive employment opportunities in the industry.

Internet penetration

The increasing use of internet for commercial purposes has transformed the way business is done, giving an unprecedented thrust to the e-commerce industry. And with the growth of e-commerce industry, as the need for rapid delivery services is growing, the logistics industry too is growing by leaps and bounds; thus, creating new job opportunities in logistics sector.

In the immediate future, growth in e-commerce segment will be driven the rapid internet penetration in tier 2 and tier 3 cities in India. This same prediction holds good for logistics industry too signifying emergence of new markets and new employment opportunities for the sector. Food delivery segment is a sunrise segment within the e-commerce pie. As more and more Indians continue to adopt the practice of ordering-in food, the employment opportunities in logistics will continue to rise. The food delivery segment alone employs 2,00,000 delivery boys. The segment is expected to grow by a whopping 80 per cent leading to employment opportunities for additional 1.6 lakh delivery persons. On the whole, we are looking at a requirement of an additional 2.5 lakh delivery persons in the entire e-commerce segment — a number almost double the current Rs 3 lakh delivery persons currently gainfully employed in the industry.

Technology deployment

The introduction of technology-based mediations in the logistics sector is also progressively opening up more and more employment opportunities.  Technology is bringing transparency, immediacy and instant connectivity to an otherwise cluttered and chaotic industry. For example, internet enables tracking systems for LCVs and other vehicles making it possible to reduce time lags in deliveries and utilize the resources efficiently. Technology also aggregates and connects opportunities with human resources making it a win-win proposition for businesses, customers and delivery and logistics partners. This creates a direct positive impact on the number of employment opportunities created and opportunities availed in the logistics sector.
