Kin of sewerman Jageer Singh, who died due to inhaling toxic gas here on Tuesday, staged a protest at the Civil Hospital here on Thursday. Several organisations of sewer men and safai karamcharis participated in the demonstration and refused to cremate the body till their demands were fulfilled.
The office-bearers of organisations and the family members demanded that victim Jageer Singh’s wife should be given a regular job and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. They also demanded the registration of a case against officials of the operation and maintenance (O&M) wing of the MC for their negligence.
MC Commissioner Komal Mittal visited the Civil Hospital and pacified the demonstrators. She offered a contractual job for the victim’s wife, but the demonstrators demanded a permanent job.
Surinder Tonna, a member of the MC employees union, said, “Jageer Singh had been serving as a sewer man for the last 18 years. We demand a permanent job and Rs 10 lakh for the family members.”
Inderjit Singh Rai, a member of the Safai Karamchari Aayog, also visited them and informed that the national office-bearers of the Aayog would visit the MC office tomorrow.
Advocate Vishav, an activist working for sewer men and manual scavengers, said, “The officials of the operation and maintenance (O&M) wing are responsible for the death of Jageer Singh as they did not provide him with the safety kit. Moreover, the junior officials should be on the spot. We demand a case of negligence against the MC executive official.”
