Folk is her strong point

Fond of folk songs, little did Sanddy Bhullar know that she would take to singing one day! Hailing from the border area, Patti, Amritsar, she was first in the family of government officials to chart a new path, and one year down the line and four songs to her credit, her family is all there for her. 

The beginning

Sanddy has done double masters from Panjab University and like many others, her parents too wanted her to join the teaching field. Anchoring in her university days made her explore singing and armed with training in classical music, she is happy living her dream.

Family entertainer 

With songs Gabhroo, Iko Tamana, Ghaint Jattiyan and Dashmesh Pita to her credit, Sanddy recalls the only condition her father put before she took her chosen path. “My father asked me to compose songs that I could sing, and watch with the family,” says the girl whose last song Dashmesh Pita is a religious track.

Truly traditional 

Having won competitions in folk dances, Sanddy is as much in love with giddha and sammi and wants to represent these dance forms internationally. “Our folk traditions are going to be the only connecting link with our roots, if we don’t carry them forward who will?”

Her favourites 

Sanddy is a huge fan of Babbu Maan – the rustic touch of his voice, the sentiments he carries through his songs and his stage presence. “In fact, I took to anchoring so that one day I could get his autograph,” reveals the girl who duly got it. Among others she looks up to Jagmohan Kaur and Surinder Kaur. “These two took to singing when women did not enjoy much freedom. Even today, their songs fill you with awe.”

Book worm 

Apart from singing, Sanddy loves to read. Amrita Pritam, Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Balwant Gargi, Surjit Patar figure among her favourite writers. “Amrita Pritam’s life journey Raseedi Ticket is a lesson in life.”
