Love thy neighbour!

Veer Zaara

Mona

Panchhi nadiya pawan ke jhonke, koi sarhad na inhe roke... goes the popular song from the film Refugee; not just on reel, but in real life too boundaries barely stop lovers from following their heart.

Tuesday brought a moment of reprieve for Ansari family as their younger son, Hamid, who completed three years in prison on charges of espionage in Pakistan, came back to India. Allegedly, it was love for a Pakistani girl, Saba, who he fell in love online, which made this software engineer throw caution to the winds in order to meet his love across the border.

Story line

The silver screen has often portrayed such tales of love, conflict and ultimate win over hatred. Gadar remains one such blockbuster that saw a Sikh-Muslim love story, played by Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, respectively, which ends on a highly jingoistic note, claiming victory of true love. More recently, it was PK, a satire replete with an Alien and Hindu-Muslim lovers across borders, played by Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput, as a sub-plot.

Not all love stories panned on screens, however, end on a happy note. Henna, which starred Rishi Kapoor and Pakistani actor Zeba Bakhtiar, was another in the line of successful films, which ends on a tragic note. Shah Rukh Khan-Preity Zinta-starrer Veer Zaara is another story of love and sacrifice across the two countries. Though we see tension on border more often than not, these two nations come together on screen, courtesy their respective spies, played by Bollywood Bhai Salman Khan and his muse Katrina Kaif, in Tiger Zinda Hai!

Happy Bhaag Jayegi celebrates the theme in comic vein. Total Siappaa is another in this league and the list carries on!
