Please, do not judge

When it comes to women, everyone has a judgement to pass; maybe this is a reflection of a patriarchal society.

When it comes to women, everyone has a judgement to pass; maybe this is a reflection of a patriarchal society. The web series about five beautiful girls, Aafat, on MX Original talks of all such stereotypes. In Chandigarh, to launch its trailer, was the cast of the show that includes Chitrashi Rawat, Pushtie Shakti, Anshul Chuahan and Nikita Dutta. And, to lead the team we had the bold and beautiful Neha Dhupia!

Quirky affair

The gang of girls say the characters of the show are those perfect women who would suit any man, just that each one of them has an unusual quirk. If there is one who likes to shave her head, there is another who doesn’t want to wax her body! Then there is a poet whose vocabulary has all the censored words, just like any man, and she makes sure to use them in anger, sadness, happiness or wherever fit; one of them gets into a love marriage and gets divorced in six months, but is open to marrying again, while another one is overweight and yet hopes for a dream wedding.

Right ideology

“I definitely stand for what this show means. There are so many stereotypes attached to women, like being divorced, bald, hairy; she is a girl so can’t abuse while a boy on the other hand has the licence for it. I’ve never lent myself to a show I am not a part of, but today I am very proud to be a part of Aafat because it is an ideology, a mindset; even if shown as comedy, there is a lot being said,” says Neha Dhupia.

Relating it with her own life, a somewhat peeved Neha says no one has the right to ‘fat shame’ her or make a headline about whether she looks good or not; it’s a person choice after all. “This happened with me few weeks ago. There was a journalist who ‘fat shamed’ me for putting on weight after pregnancy; I don’t understand why I need to be answerable! Who is this person who decided ‘no this should be your weight’?

Being happy in her skin, she adds. “Guess what, I am absolutely fine, I am making sure I look after my daughter; I am feeding her, I feed myself and I smile my way to work and at home, and that’s the most important thing.”

Right to choose

The show isn’t a battle between men and women; it’s not even about empowerment, a word which Neha believes is used and misused endlessly. “What is important is that we don’t need to be following such norms. We are fine the way we are. Don’t judge one of us if she doesn’t thread her upper lip! Do we judge men for having a stubble or full-grown beard?” says Neha.
