Things often don’t go according to the plan, like Punjabi film actress and model Isha Rikhi’s Bollywood debut! However, some things do go according to the plan, like Isha not being comfortable with on screen kissing scenes, which means a limited number of Bollywood films in the coming times.

She smiles, “I never wanted a Hate Story kind of debut. My last film was a Punjabi project, Ardaas, and immediately after this I decided that now I had to do a role that would give me a scope to act. I turned down many offers and finally after two years of long wait, I signed my first Bollywood film, Nawabzaade.”

Starry eyes

The film, directed by Jayesh Pradhan, stars reality TV dancing stars Raghav Juyal, Punit Pathak and Dharmesh Yelande. Isha plays the leading lady. “Since there is too much glamour, the director was looking for a girl who was ‘innocently beautiful’,” adds Isha.

She talks nineteen-to-dozen about how comfortable she was on the sets of Nawabzaade, “Both the director as well as the star cast was very cooperative, they didn’t make me feel like a newcomer.”

Balancing act

So, did Isha see any difference in functioning of Bollywood and Punjabi film industry? “The only difference was that of the language. To be honest, no matter what kind of role one does in a Punjabi film, there isn’t much scope for an actress. This is very unsettling for me. I know that I have talent and all it takes is an acting-oriented role to recognise this talent.” So, this means a goodbye to Punjabi films? “Not at all, I am here because of Punjabi films; I would be doing many more projects, but I want to do substantial roles where I get space to act.”

Punjabi turf

Now that Isha has opened her innings in Bollywood, she is looking forward. “I had never planned on acting in a Bollywood film, so I don’t know what will happen next. I will only focus on work; I strongly believe in destiny.”

So, any survival mantra? “Work is the only mantra; I am an anti-social person and have been told that I need to mingle with people if I have to survive in Bollywood. I think otherwise, I think I will cast in a role for my talent and not because I can mingle with people. Rest, of course, I need to spare more time for social media.”
