The best bride ever…

Many a designers have confessed how it’s an intimidating slash overwhelming slash gratifying task of designing for a bride.  Since it’s not about putting the prints and colours in place, or dictating the trends, it’s about giving reality to all sorts of visions; a sexy bride, a dreamy bride, a what-not bride.  But what in fact, they are working on is an ‘eventually serene’ bride at the end of a stressed-out bride. The one who is happy with her outfit.  Just as their collections roll out at the Vogue Wedding Show scheduled in August, they pin point the kind of bride they are catering to and of course their most special bride ever. Like ever.  “It was an Indo—Irish wedding where the bride wore a dazzling white Jade lehenga, with a trail at the back, keeping the quintessential white wedding look intact, while also honouring the traditional Indian attire. It was an absolute delight making that outfit for her. She looked stunning,” designer duo Monica Shah and Karishma Swali from the label Jade recall a bride they distinctly remember. But what they all collectively applaud on is how a bride wants to look herself.

The imagination is mutual

“It is my childhood dream to have a Christian style wedding, just like the fairy tales. I always imagine myself as a bride who will wear a gown, with a long train and veil,” Sushmita Sen once popularly said about the kind of bride she’d like to be. It’s not just the brides-to-be who imagine what they’ll wear, meanwhile it’s the designers too who imagine the bride that’ll wear them. Ritu Kumar understands that many a brides nowadays do not equate opulence with something shiny.  Therefore, her kind of bride is someone who, “not only enjoys beautiful clothes but also understands the intrinsic work that a bridal outfit requires. She celebrates and values textiles.” The definition of a modern Indian bride is all encompassing now, she shuttles between the backless fishtail gowns to traditional handcrafted weaves.  Manish Malhotra knows all the millennial brides far too well to do anything that can be overlooked. “They like to carry a personality, different from other brides and don’t mind attention at all, she likes traditions but interprets in her own way. She doesn’t fear glamour, doesn’t mind being sensuous.”

A little bit of history

“One of the outfits I created which was quite interesting was for Kareena Kapoor Khan, for her wedding day. Kareena’s antique heirloom was a Bhopali Joda which originally belonged to Sharmila Tagore’s mother in law, Begum of Bhopal, who belonged to the royal family of Bhopal. The joda had to be revived and restyled in a way that it would fit into the aesthetics of today without losing its intrinsic quality. It took 6 months to conceive and recreate the odhni and the outfit. The outfit was a divided sharara with a long trail, which needed two people to hold from the back while walking. The trail was made shorter so that Kareena was comfortable and could walk with ease.””

Opulence redefined

Any bridal attention to detail is often equated with all things bridezilla, but Manish Malhotra recalls the experience of one of his serene, calm and confident brides. Which is why we guess she is the most special. “Isha Ambani because she was a relaxed and a comfortable bride. She knew what she likes and what she doesn’t like. What she should wear and shouldn’t wear. She was clear with designs for different functions. For her sangeet, she chose gold mesh of a ghaghra and a gold strap top, I found this very cool and young. The entire embroidery was mesh which was very experimental.” —Manish Malhotra
