If cycling conjures up images of youngsters in their sweat pants idling, around on bicycle tracks… that is just the kind of image they want to shake up. Cyclegiri, an initiative by Dr Sunaina Bansal, senior gynecologist, IVY Hospital, and Amaan Bhullar, an avid cyclist from Mohali, together want to promote cycling as a means of commuting to work, rather than just a hobby meant for holidays.
Shares Dr Viniti Goel, periodontist and implantologist, and an active member of the group, “Cyclegiri is just another initiative to contribute to preserving our environment, while at the same time inculcating the healthy habit of cycling, which, unfortunately, our urban lifestyles have affected the most. Currently, we have as many as 300 members, which are surely going to grow in the coming future, of which more than half are active.”
Little wonder, in less than two years of its formation, the group has to its credit more than 100 events already. She adds, “The members are really aggressive and passionate about the pursuit of cycling. We have events happening almost on a weekly basis.”
As for today, as part of the World Car Free Day celebrations, Cyclegiri has organised a rally, encouraging one and all to come and ride in formals. —TNS
