Manas Shah, who is currently part of the show Tulsi - Hamari Badi Sayani, wants to keep growing as an actor
What is your role in Tulsi - Hamari Badi Sayani?
My character in the show is like Robinhood—an anti-hero who fights against wrongdoings and supports the right causes. He might look like a don with a commanding presence in the city, but deep down he’s a kind-hearted and cool person. It’s a unique and positive role where I’m entering as a new hero.
How is this role different from the ones you’ve essayed before?
This role is very different from anything I’ve done in the past. It’s a mix of an anti-hero and a hero with layers of complexity, which makes it challenging and exciting to portray.
What are your views on the rise of OTT platforms post Covid?
OTT platforms have become very popular, mainly due to the quality of their content. They don’t face the pressure of telecast deadlines like TV shows do, allowing them to focus on creativity, performances and scripts. This has set them apart from traditional TV.
What differences do you see between OTT and television in terms of production?
OTT platforms have better budgets, more time for shooting and a strong emphasis on post-production. In contrast, TV shows have tight schedules and the pressure to meet TRP targets, which often compromises creativity and quality.
What challenges do you think the television industry is facing today?
The main challenges are in casting and creativity. Both areas have significant flaws, and the rush to produce content affects the overall quality. Content is the real hero and without strong content, it becomes hard for TV shows to survive.
Do you think TV will be able to compete with OTT platforms?
TV needs to address its issues in creativity and casting to stay relevant. While it’s struggling to maintain its place, focusing on good content can help it compete with OTT platforms in the longer run.
You were preparing for the IAS exam before becoming an actor. Would you still pursue it?
Yes, absolutely. My dream was to join the Indian Foreign Services (IFS). If time permits or in another life, I would love to give the Civil Services exam another shot and fulfill that dream.
What keeps you motivated in your acting journey?
The opportunity to play diverse roles and explore new dimensions of storytelling keeps me motivated. Every new project brings its own challenges and excitement, which pushes me to keep growing as an actor.
