Ludhiana, February 20

Farmer unions continued their protest near Ayali Chowk amid moderate rain for third day. Agitating farmers raised slogans against the government for its failure to provide them relief.

Bhartiya Kissan Union (BKU Dakaunda) senior vice-president Manjit Singh Dhaner said consecutive governments have failed to resolve the issues related to farmers. “It is unfortunate that the government only works for safeguarding interests of industrialists. Nobody cares for the welfare of farmers who feed the entire country. It is due to this indifferent attitude of the government that farmers have been committing suicides,” said Dhaner.

Shingara Singh of BKU (Ugrahan) said the government should wave entire loan of farmers to provide relief to the farming community.

“The Central Government waved loans of big industrialists. It has done little to improve the condition of farmers. Political parties only remember farmers at the time of elections,” he said.

Activists appealed farming community to get united for the common cause.
