Panic spread at Bharat Nagar Chowk, Ludhiana's busiest area, today when heavy sacks of wheat suddenly began falling from a bridge under construction as a moving truck tilted onto the bridge wall.
The accident struck two passing cars and caused injuries to the drivers.
According to local shopkeepers, the truck passing over the bridge was overloaded and suddenly, sacks of wheat began falling from the truck. The intensity and weight of the sacks was huge, thus it crushed the roofs and doors of the cars parked below.
A shopkeeper who witnessed the incident said, "I was sitting in my shop when suddenly I heard something falling from above. When I looked up, I saw sacks falling from the bridge. Our shop's signboard kept outside has been completely destroyed.”
Drivers of the damaged cars were sitting inside when the sacks fell and crushed their roofs. Passers-by immediately helped and pulled them out. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, however, have been declared to be out of any danger. Investigation is under-way.
