The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Shiv Mohan Garg has convicted two persons identified as Sunil Kumar and Ashu Masih, both residents of Gurdaspur district, in a narcotics case. The duo were ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 12 years each.

Pronouncing the verdict, the court held that the prosecution had successfully proved charges levelled against the accused beyond any doubt. Both the accused were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh each. The Judge also turned down the plea of leniency raised by the accused.

Divulging details, Additional Public Prosecutor SS Haider apprised that a case against the duo was registered at the Khanna city police station on December 11, 2018. On that day, a police party of the anti-narcotics cell headed by Sub-Inspector Labh Singh had laid a naka on the Khanna-Delhi National Highway and checking vehicles. On seeing naka, the accused alighted from their vehicle and tried to run away with bags on their shoulders. Following suspicion, the police party stopped them. Thereafter, SP (Investigation) Jasvir Singh was called on the spot.

In his presence, the accused were searched. The police party recovered 35,700 capsules from bag of Sunil Kumar and 35,400 capsules from bag of Ashu Masih. They were taken into custody and charge sheet was filed against them.

However, during trial the accused pleaded not guilty. But after appreciating the evidence on record, the court found them guilty of possessing huge quantity of intoxicating capsules without any permit or licence and sentenced them to 12-year rigorous imprisonment.
