Ludhiana, September 6

The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Jarnail Singh has convicted Gurdeep Singh, alias Deepa, a resident of Bhutta village, Dehlon, and Salamat Khan, alias Mian, of Umedpur village, Dehlon Road, in a narcotics case.

The duo were ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 10 years each. A fine of Rs 1 lakh each was also imposed upon the convicts. The court turned down the plea of leniency raised by them.

A case against the accused was registered on February 28, 2016, at the Sahnewal police station. According to prosecution, a police party, headed by SI Avtar Singh, had laid a naka near HP Gas godown in Ramgarh village where the accused were seen coming on a scooter.

On seeing the police party, they tried to flee the spot. Following suspicion, the police party apprehended them. Accused Gurdeep was driving the scooter and the other accused, who was riding pillion, was holding a plastic bag. On search, 30 kg of poppy husk was recovered from their possession and they were arrested.

However, during the trial, the accused pleaded innocence but after appreciating the evidence on record, the court found them guilty.
