Alleging inaction in the case, people in large numbers rushed to Phullanwal Chowk and raised slogans against the police.

The protesters said the accident occurred around 11.30 pm when the deceased was heading home on a motorcycle. When he reached near the chowk, the speeding car hit him, they added.

“Police moved the car involved in the accident to a nearby petrol pump. Instead of taking action against the driver — who is reportedly an influential individual — the authorities allegedly pressed the victim’s family to reach a compromise. Initially, the police did not disclose the details of the vehicle. However, after we located the car at a petrol pump near the accident site, we brought it to Phullanwal Chowk and blocked a road. We will continue our protest till a case is registered and the accused arrested,” the protesters said.

They claimed that soon after the accident, the victim’s family and friends reached the spot, nabbed the driver and handed him over to the police. However, they alleged that the police let him go. They said the driver identified himself as a lawyer.
