Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu launched development projects worth about Rs 565 crore here today and assured the public that more projects worth about Rs 4,000 would be started in next three years. He said round-the-clock canal water supply would be provided to the residents very soon.

“After every 50,000 persons, a fire brigade will be made available. There is a need for 550 fire brigades in the state. We are going to bring a fire services project worth Rs 550 crore. Ludhiana will have a fire engine with advanced hydraulic ladder for fighting fires at high-rising buildings soon,” he said.

Sidhu said Capt Amarinder Singh-led Punjab Government was committed to carrying out overall development of the state, and moving forward in this direction, development projects worth crores will be started in Ludhiana city. He was addressing the audience at a function organised by the Municipal Corporation today.

While speaking to media persons on the occasion, Sidhu said Ludhiana was the backbone of the economy of the state as well as the country. These projects include construction of a modern slaughter house, development of basic infrastructure in the city, smart toilets, construction of a sports stadium in Daba and others.

He said the development projects worth Rs 50 crore had been completed by the MC and more projects worth Rs 98 crore were in progress. Tenders worth Rs 84 crore for various development projects have been floated and work would be allotted by February 28, he said.

“e-parking facility has been introduced. The contractor concerned will receive payment whenever a vehicle is parked at a specific place through e-ticketing. The problem of overcharging will be resolved with the introduction of this system. Under the AMRUT scheme, 230-km water supply line and 25 new tube-wells would be installed at a cost of Rs 40 crore. Under the AMRUT scheme, a detailed project report (DPR) regarding construction of 16 overhead water reservoirs in the city at a cost of Rs 14 crore has already been approved and the tenders will be floated soon,” he said.

The minister announced rehabilitation work on three STPs (in Jamalpur, Bhattian and Balloke) at a cost of Rs 19 crore, two ETPs in Dairy Complex on Tajpur Road of 5-MLD capacity each, setting up of new STPs in Jamalpur of 50-MLD capacity (Rs 55.23 crore) and at Balloke of 50-MLD capacity (Rs 50.73 crore). Tenders for these works would be floated soon. Under the AMRUT scheme, the DPR regarding the construction of five new parks at a cost of Rs 2.47 crore have been approved, he said.

A number of projects under the Smart City Mission were also announced during the event. A two-minute silence was also observed to pay homage to the martyrs of the Pulwama terrorist attack.

Prominent among those present on the occasion were Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu, MLAs Rakesh Pandey, Surinder Dawar and Sanjay Talwar, MC Commissioner KP Brar, GLADA Chief Administrator Parminder Singh Gill and Local Bodies Director Karunesh Sharma.

Project launch a drama: SAD-BJP

Terming the event a drama, District Shiromani Akali Dal president Ranjit Singh Dhillon said many of the proposed projects announced by the Congress government earlier could not see the light of day. He said Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu had laid the foundation stones of many projects worth Rs 3,600 crore in September 2017, but nothing was done. "The projects were announced to woo voters before the MC elections. Now, the Lok Sabha elections are nearing and the Congress has once again held a drama of launching development projects worth Rs 565 crore," he said. "The civic body is struggling with its poor financial condition and it is unable to purchase most items required for various branches. Many projects under the Smart City Mission have been announced once again, just to cheat the people. The residents of many wards are suffering due to overflowing sewers," said vice-president Ludhiana BJP Parminder Mehta.
