Ludhiana, December 15

A 25-year-old woman was raped by her friend on the pretext of marrying her. The suspect has been identified as Ritesh Rana, a resident of Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh.

The complainant, who is a resident of Urban Estate, Jamalpur, said she became friends with the suspect about three years back and their friendship turned into a serious relationship recently.

“Since I wanted to marry Ritesh and he even promised that he would marry me one day, he continued to physically exploit me. I repeatedly asked him to get married but he only made hollow promises. On December 7, the suspect barged into my house when I was alone, and raped me,” she said, adding that he again violated her on the night of December 8 at her house.

After those incidents, whenever she would ask Ritesh for marriage, he issued her life threats.

The investigating officer, ASI Harjit Singh, said a case under section 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC had been registered against the suspect and raids were on to nab him.
