Panic gripped the Islamganj locality of the city on Monday after a three-month-old female foetus was recovered during cleaning of a sewerage line, said officials. Police said they have taken up an investigation into the matter.
They said the Municipal Corporation had received complaints about sewer overflows in the area and dispatched workers. A worker found the foetus stuck in a pipeline while inspecting the blockage and alerted the police
Inspector Jasvir Singh Gill, Station-House Officer (SHO), Division Number 2, reached the spot and supervised shifting of the foetus to the mortuary at the local Civil Hospital for a medical examination and forensic analysis.
Police said they are scanning the footage from the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed near the spot to ascertain details of the incident.
According to the police, they are also conducting door-to-door inquiries in the nearby areas to gather leads regarding those responsible for the crime.
