The Ludhiana police have arrested four members of a bikers’ gang involved in 11 cases of sensational robberies in the city during the past one year. The gang had been looting cash and gold in an organised way.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Rakesh Agrawal said the gang members used to cover their faces with helmets and wear gloves while committing crime.

He said CCTV camera footage and other evidences were collected during investigation of all these incidents and a special investigation team (SIT) had been set up comprising DCP (Detective) Simratpal Singh Dhindsa, ADCP (Investigation) Harish Kumar Dayama and ACP Waryam Singh to crack the cases and bring the hardcore criminals to book.

According to the CP, a joint police party of the CIA and the Police Division 2 had received information that Sanjiv Chopra (38), alias Shera, Sunny Kumar (35), alias Sunny, Amandeep Singh (33), alias Bhau, Gudu Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar (32), alias Babbu, had formed a gang and were again plotting a robbery near Quality Chowk in Kidwai Nagar here.

During a surprise raid on the spot yesterday, Sunny and Amandeep, both residents of Manakwal village, and Mukesh of Preet Nagar, Sangrur, were arrested.

The leader of the gang, Sanjiv, a resident of Neemwala Chowk, Shahpur Road, and another suspect Guddu Jaiswal, a resident of Lucknow (UP) and at present residing at Railway Colony No. 4, here, managed to escape from the spot.

However, today the police arrested Sanjiv with a .32 bore pistol and two live cartridges.

The arrested suspects were produced before a court today which remanded them in police custody for five days. During interrogation, it was revealed that Sanjiv was convicted for 10-year imprisonment in a murder and dacoity case in 2005 under Section 460, IPC, but he jumped parole in 2014 and had been absconding since then. He also has another case under Sections 25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act registered against him at the Mohindra Park police station in New Delhi.

The police had recovered three pistols, two live cartridges, an iron dagger, two swords, an iron pipe, three helmets, Rs40,000 in cash, five motorcycles and a Honda Activa two-wheeler from the four suspects.
