Under the Mission Tandrust Punjab of the state government, the district administration has been laying special emphasis on setting up of biogas plants in a bid to save environment and provide cheap cooking gas to residents.
The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has set a target of setting up 400 biogas plants in the district by March 31. Beneficiaries (those coming forward to set up the plants) would get a subsidy of Rs12,000 per plant.
Around 180 beneficiaries have already been identified and more applications were still flooding the deparment.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Agrawal and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Dr Shena Aggarwal said biogas plant scheme was under the PEDA and the Rural Development Department would identify eligible beneficiaries and send them to the ADC (D) and work for setting up plants would be carried out by the PEDA.
Pollution-free gas
- Methane gas produced by biogas plant is known as green gas as it does not cause any kind of pollution
- Biogas is a very suitable alternative to conventional cooking gas used in homes
- Very high-quality fertiliser is produced from the residue of a biogas plant which can be used by farmers
- The biogas plant scheme not only provides gas to beneficiaries, but even helps them financially because as one can save up to one-and-a-half cylinder every month
Save expenses as well
- The district administration has appealed to residents to set up maximum biogas plants in villages
- This would reduce the expenditure of residents and help in keeping environment pollution-free
