5 held taking bets on cricket tie

Ludhiana, July 19

The Ludhiana police have arrested five bookies for allegedly accepting bets on cricket matches of Tamil Nadu Premier League. They were arrested by the Model Town police from a house in White Quarters near Dhuri Railway Track following a tip-off on Wednesday evening.

Those arrested have been identified as Raj Kumar of White Quarters, Himanshu Malhotra of White Quarters, Toni of Islamganj, Ramesh Kumar of Muradpura Kalsian and Kakku of Haibowal Kalan in Ludhiana. The police have seized Rs 1. 34 lakh, 13 mobile phones and one tablet, allegedly used by them for accepting bets on cricket matches.

The police have registered a case under various sections of the IPC and the Gambling Act.

The ADCP 3, Gurpreet Kaur Purewal, said: “Following a tip-off, a police team from the Model Town station carried out a raid at White Quarters and arrested five persons for accepting bets on cricket matches of Tamil Nadu Premier League. We have also recovered more than Rs 1 lakh in cash, 13 mobile phones and one tablet used by the accused for accepting bets.”

The accused have confessed before the police that they had been involved in this illegal trade for a long time. “Further investigation is on. We expect some more revelations from the accused,” he added.
