For the implementation of a single-use plastic ban in the city, the Municipal Corporation (MC) carried out an awareness drive in Ghumar Mandi here on Saturday. The MC also issued challans against six shopkeepers for using single-use plastic items.
MLA from Ludhiana West Gurpreet Gogi launched the drive. MC’s Zonal Commissioner Jasdev Singh Sekhon, who was leading the drive, said they spread awareness among the people to not to use single-use plastic items.
A cleanliness drive was also conducted on the occasion and an appeal was made to the public to ensure segregation of waste. Sekhon said the people were requested to use separate bins for the collection of dry and wet waste.
He said six challans were issued to shopkeepers for using the banned single-use plastic and thermocol items and plastic carry bags.
As per the notification issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, New Delhi, there is a complete ban on manufacturing, stocking, distribution, sale, and utilisation of single-use plastic from July 1 onwards.
