Ludhiana, May 15

If the information provided by the Ludhiana Police Commissionerate is to be believed, the city witnessed as many as 656 murders since 2010. The police have been able to solve only 552 murders while 104 are still a mystery for investigating officials.

Information under the Right to Information Act has been obtained by the RTI activist, Rohit Sabharwal, from the police.

As per information given by the police, from January 1, 2019, to March 31, 2019, as many as 18 murder cases have been registered of which police have solved 16 while probe into the two is yet to see the light of day.

Since the Ludhiana Commissionerate came into existence in 2010, and the same year reported maximum of 90 murder cases. Afterwards, the murder tally did not cross the 90 mark.

In 2011, and 2012, 76 and 79 murders, respectively, were reported of which the police solved only 65 and 62. There is no clue in the remaining 11 and 17 murders, respectively, in 2011 and 2012.

Interestingly, in 2014 and 2015, 73 murders were reported in each year out of which, 11 and 13 cases, respectively, are yet to be cracked by the police.

In 2016, 2017, and 2018, 64, 59, and 53 murder cases, respectively, were reported out of which the police solved 53, 50, and 48 murders in the corresponding year.

It is pertinent to mention here that the police probe in pending murder cases failed to get any vital leads. Due to this reason these cases have remained unsolved till date.

Untraced reports filed in some cases

The police have filed “untraced” reports in a few cases, citing their inability to solve these. In a majority of cases, they are still hoping for a breakthrough. A few cases, including the murder of Mata Chand Kaur, 88, wife of Namdhari leader late Satguru Jagjit Singh, on April 4, 2016, at Bhaini Sahib, and Namdhari leader Avtar Tari on April 12, 2011, have been given to the CBI. However, the premier investigation agency is yet to show any outcome in these cases.
