65th annual athletics meet kicks off at Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana
Role of sports vital in shaping youth's character, says chief guest
Energies ran high as the 65th annual athletics meet of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, kicked off on Friday, said officials.
Hockey stalwart Dilpreet Singh, Arjuna awardee, Olympian and Deputy Superintendent of Police, was the chief guest at the inaugural function of the two-day event, along with Varun Kumar, Arjuna awardee and Olympian, and Ravneet Singh, international hockey player, as the guests of honour.
In his address, Varun Kumar highlighted the importance of sports in shaping youth’s character and teaching them discipline and teamwork. He hailed the institution’s commitment towards excellence in sports, academics and cultural activities.
The dignitaries were received by Mukti Gill, director; Kamaljit Grewal, principal; faculty members and students.
The event started with a march past by the students, following which the chief guest took a salute, hoisted the national flag and declared the meet open.
Students took an oath to uphold the true spirit of sporting spirit.
The audience was impressed by a martial arts display by students, showcasing courage, agility and fitness. The students’ council presented a thematic showcase, titled “International year of Volunteers”. The showcase underlined the role of youth in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), including gender equality, innovation, climate action and peace.
The day saw competitions such as 50-metre race, shot put, high jump, spoon-and-potato race, long jump and three-legged race, among others.
