9 PAU students bag national scholarships

LUDHIANA: The agricultural engineers from the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), have secured job placements and admission to pursue their higher studies by clearing national-level examinations, conducted by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB) and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).

The agricultural engineers from the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), have secured job placements and admission to pursue their higher studies by clearing national-level examinations, conducted by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB) and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).

Rajesh U Modi and Nand Lal Kushwaha, students of the department of farm machinery and power engineering and department of soil and water engineering, respectively, have been recruited for the Agricultural Research Services (ARS) as scientists at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Presently, Modi is pursuing his PhD on “Design, development and evaluation of tractor operated seeder for mat type paddy nursery”. Kushwaha has completed his MTech in soil and water engineering with his research on “Hydrologic characterisation and soil erosion risk mapping of a watershed using remote sensing and GIS”.

Besides these two, three more students, Abhishek Patel, Rouf Aslam and Asseya Wahid, have secured admission in PhD programmes at the Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CIAE), Bhopal, through the ICAR-IARI PhD entrance exam, conducted at the national-level. These three candidates have also been selected for the ICAR Senior Research Fellowships (SRF) through the ASRB examination. Abhishek Patel completed MTech in farm machinery and power engineering, while Aslam and Asseya Wahid completed their MTech in processing and food engineering, respectively.

Gurpreet Jhally and Sunil Kumar, both graduates in BTech agricultural engineering, secured the ICAR Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) to pursue their MTech at the ICAR Institutions and State Agricultural Universities, respectively. Another student BTech agricultural engineering, Bhupinder Jeet Singh, has bagged admission in MTech at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE-2019) examination, conducted by IIT Madras.

Jatinderpal Singh of the department of climate change and agricultural meteorology, has bagged the ICAR-Senior Research Fellowship (ICAR-SRF). He did his research on “Performance of WOFOST and DSSAT models in predicting effect of climate change on wheat under different RCP emission pathways.” In his research findings, he observed the effect of climate change on wheat crop for future period using representative concentration pathways. He is presently pursuing his doctorate and has qualified the ICAR-NET exam conducted by ASRB.

Besides these eight students, Prashant Sahni, a PhD scholar of the department of food science and technology, attended the Manna Centre’s Food Safety and Security Summer Institute at the Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel. He was awarded the PBC Scholarship by Israel for attending this training programme. He also presented a project on “Micro-algae for addressing undernutrition in India” as part of the one-month training. Focusing on global food security issues, the training was attended by participants from 12 countries across the globe. Sahni is also a recipient of the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Vice-Chancellor Baldev Singh Dhillon and dean of postgraduate studies GK Sangha congratulated the agri-engineers for bringing laurels to the university and for the recognition they got at the national and international level. They wished them luck.
