Of the 91 traffic black spots identified in Ludhiana under a study, a maximum of 35 are on the NH 44 stretch from Sahnewal to Ladhowal. It speaks volumes of the neglect of road-users’ safety who shell out huge amounts as toll on NH 44.

According to a report, “Accident Black Spot Identification & Rectification Programme on Various Highways/Roads of Punjab”, prepared under the Tandrust Punjab Mission, 91 black spots have been identified on the roads in Ludhiana police commissionerate areas. As many as 524 fatalities had been reported at these 91 identified black spots during 2016-18.

As many as 22 black spots have been identified on the NH 5 stretch that includes spots on Ferozepur Road and Chandigarh Road. Apart from this, 18 black spots on link roads, 13 on the state highways, including SH 11 and 20) and three on the MC roads in Ludhiana have been identified under the study.

The black spots have been described in five categories — first order, second order, third order, fourth order and fifth order black spots. In Ludhiana, 10 first order black spots have been identified and these require immediate attention of the authorities concerned. Of the 10 first order black spots, nine are located on NH 44 stretch and one on NH 5.

Sahnewal Bridge is the first order black spot where 22 fatalities were reported during 2016-2018. Sixteen fatalities were reported on the Dhandari flyover while 13 at Kailash Nagar Chowk, which are also first order black spots, during 2016-2018.

A man and his daughter were killed and one person was injured when a heavy vehicle hit an Activa scooter at Kailash Nagar Chowk on Sunday night.

Traffic Adviser Navdeep K Asija said the departments concerned would have to take necessary measures to rectify the black spots to ensure safety of commuters. A road safety activist, Rahul Verma, said the foot overbridges for pedestrians are not being constructed on NH 44 due to which mishaps are frequent on the stretch. Dangerous diversions should be plugged to prevent accidents, he said.
