Ludhiana, July 11

World Population Day was observed across the district under the guidance of the Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, Rajesh Kumar Bagga.

While speaking on the occasion, Dr Bagga said the state Health and Family Welfare Department was celebrating population stability fortnight in the state from July 11 to 24.

The department is making all efforts to curb the rapid growth of population through various means of communication and create awareness about its fatal consequences.

To sensitise people to the issue, an awareness van was also flagged off by the Civil Surgeon today.

“The rapid growth of population is a matter of concern for all of us. As population of the country grows, we will face shortage of our natural resources such as water, foodgrains and other daily necessities,” Dr Bagga said.

He said to control the increasing population, a boy and a girl should be married at the right age, the first child should be delayed, there should be a gap of at least three years between children. A couple should limit their family size to only one or two children and the girl child should be given equal status.

District Family Welfare Officer SP Singh said this year’s theme stresses on the need for stabilising population amid the pandemic.

District Mass Education and Information Officer Harjinder Singh apprised about adverse effects of the growing population and said after marriage, couples should do family planning.

He said family planning methods should be adopted by eligible couples and encouraged eligible couples to adopt permanent family planning methods such as tubectomy and incisionless sterilisation for males, also known as vasectomy and persons adopting these permanent methods are given adequate monetary compensation by the government.

DMC Mahinder Singh, Rajinder Singh Jagjivan Sharma were also present.
