Ludhiana, June 24
Animal skinners have ended their strike and restarted lifting of carcasses of cattle from dairy complexes and other locations of the city.
Earlier, they had gone on a strike in protest against fresh notices sent by the PPCB.
The PPCB had directed five animal skinners to pay Rs 11.40-crore environmental compensation charges within 15 days for allegedly discharging effluents from “hadda rodi” (the place where carcasses are skinned) near Ladhowal into the Sutlej. The skinners had then stopped lifting carcasses in the city.
An animal skinner, Krishan Lal, said: “We had met Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu who assured us that our issue will be resolved soon. Now, we have ended our strike and started lifting the carcasses.” — TNS
