Athletics meet comes to a close at SCD Govt College, Ludhiana

The 106th annual athletics meet concluded on Friday at SCD Government College here, witnessing active participation from students of morning and evening wings, faculty members, alumni and staff, said officials.

During the event, cash awards of Rs 4,000 each were presented to 37 outstanding sportspersons.

The best athlete titles were awarded to Mohit (BA III) in morning college (boys), Priyanka Kumari (BSc III) in morning college (girls) and Bhavjot Singh (BA III) in evening college (boys).

They said Padma Shri awardee Baldev Singh, an eminent hockey coach, was the chief guest on concluding day of the two-day event.

He was welcomed by principal Gursharn Jit Singh Sandhu and senior faculty members.

Introducing the chief guest, Sandhu highlighted his contribution to Indian hockey, particularly his efforts in strengthening women’s sport in the country.

The principal reiterated the institution’s commitment to excellence in academics and sports. He said plans were afoot for the construction of an indoor volleyball stadium on campus to strengthen sports infrastructure. He appreciated the Department of Physical Education for their disciplined and systematic conduct of the meet.

Baldev Singh shared his memories of practicing on the college grounds during his early years and emphasised the need for more funding and structured institutional support for budding athletes, particularly female sportspersons.
