An unidentified man threw acid on a 40-year-old woman working as a labourer in Dugri on Monday. The incident caused panic in the area as the suspect fled the scene after committing the crime. The woman’s eyes and face were severely burned in the attack.
As per reports, the victim has been identified as Savitri, a native of Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. Mother of three, the victim had been staying in Ludhiana for the past many years.
As per information, Savitri had come to the Guru Gian Vihar area of Dugri for lunch break when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was wearing a yellow scarf and a helmet.
He first approached Savitri and asked her to come close on the pretext of asking something. As she approached, he threw acid from a bottle onto her face and fled the scene.
An eyewitness, Laja Vati, said the attack was instant and before she could save herself, acid was thrown on the victim.
“Savitri is like our aunt. We all work as labourers. She has been staying in the city for several years. She has three children,” she said.
The victim’s niece, Nisha, said she and her aunt were working together. They were talking about food when the man came on a bike, called Savitri, and threw acid on her and escaped from the place. Following the incident, people rushed the injured to a hospital,” she said.
Meanwhile, police officials said the woman was discharged from the hospital after treatment. After registering a case, the police launched a probe to identify the suspect. CCTV cameras were also being checked. Police officials said the motive behind the crime remains unclear so far.
