Bonfire, singing contest mark Lohri celebrations at Green Land school

Green Land Convent School, New Subhash Nagar, Basti Jodhewal, Ludhiana, organised a cultural programme on the occasion of Lohri – the harvest festival of Punjab — on the school premises. Colourful kites, balloons, and buntings adorned every corner of the campus, creating a joyful ambience.

A special bonfire was lit, around which teachers and students sat together and enjoyed singing and dancing. The celebration was initiated by illuminating the sacred bonfire by Principal Dr Jyoti Sachdev Pujara, staff members, and students. This was followed by speeches from students, highlighting the importance of the festival.

Students of Pre-Nursery to Class II came dressed in traditional Punjabi attire, reflecting the festive spirit of the culture.

Meanwhile, students of classes III to V participated in an essay writing competition on the theme of Lohri. Through their essays, they showcased their understanding of the festival’s significance, the age-old traditions associated with it, and its relevance in modern times.

The school also organised an inter-house singing competition, where students from various houses performed traditional Punjabi songs and folk tunes. The participants exhibited remarkable talent, singing with great zeal and enthusiasm. The famous folk song, ‘Sunder Munderiye,’ among others, was performed. The competition added an extra layer of excitement to the celebrations and was thoroughly enjoyed by both participants and audience alike.

The students also performed giddha and bhangra. Rajesh Rudhra, chairman of the chain of Green Land Schools, congratulated the staff and students on the occasion.

Principal Pujara shared the famous folklore of ‘Dullha Bhatti’ with the students on the occasion. She said Lohri prompted people to be thankful for God’s provision.
