Buildings, school wall collapse

Ludhiana, July 18

Two dilapidated residential buildings and the wall of a government school collapsed in the city during rain on Wednesday.

Two ‘unsafe’ multi-storeyed residential buildings collapsed near Nikkamal Saraf Chowk on Shivala Road here. Debris of the two buildings reportedly fell on a scooter, a bike and cycles.

A local leader said those houses were in a dilapidated condition and had been lying vacant for a long time. Assistant Town Planner (ATP) Mohan Singh said those residential buildings were earlier declared unsafe by the MC and notices were served on their owners to get them demolished.

No casualty was reported. However, a few vehicles were damaged in the incident, he added.

There are several unsafe buildings in the city, especially in old city areas, but no concrete measures have been taken to avoid such incidents. An MC official claimed the cases related to some disputed properties were sub judice due to which they couldn’t take any action.

Govt school wall collapses

The wall of the government school, Haibowal Khurd, collapsed during the rain. A car parked close to the wall was damaged. Ajay Miglani of Kitchlu Nagar said he had parked his car near the wall. The wall was earlier got repaired. “My car has been badly damaged in the incident. However, a major tragedy was averted as nobody was present in the car,” he added.
